The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a temporary full-time Coordinator, Cemeteries in the Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries division. This temporary full-time opportunity is for a period up to May 2025.

Job description

The Coordinator, Cemeteries is responsible for coordination of cemetery sales, monument installations, genealogical requests, volunteer restoration committee, and marketing/promotion activities.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Coordinate all requests from funeral homes and family members in terms of identifying inventory for sales
  • Assist families with purchase decisions and undertake all the processing of appropriate paperwork as per regulatory and municipal requirements for all policies, procedures, and related responsibilities
  • Layout of graves for interment purposes as required
  • Coordinate and assist with inquiries related to the Municipal Interment Policy and requests for use/transfer/sales by Interment Rights Holders and legal offices
  • Manage any Customer Service requests submitted by Customer Service Representatives or customers
  • Assist with office coverage as required
  • Support requests for genealogical research
  • Assist with administrative functions relating to interments, work orders, customer service and cemetery issues
  • Liaise with memorial companies regarding memorial placement, sizing and consistency with bylaws
  • Prepare marketing and advertising strategies for new sales initiatives
  • Support a communication system designed to be available seven days per week
  • Maintain a familiarity with the requirements of the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act and other regulatory and statutory requirements associated with cemetery operations
  • Coordinate activities with cemetery volunteers
  • Works in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety
  • Participate, as required, on internal committees focused on various initiatives
  • Perform ‘Acting Supervisor’ duties as required

Essential qualifications

  • College certificate or diploma (preferably in a business, funeral service, or cemetery operations program), with two (2) to four (4) years of related experience.
  • Experience working in a death care industry preferred
  • Cemetery sales experience preferred
  • Knowledge of/experience working with the Cemeteries Act and other associated legislation
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software programs)

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Funeral Director certification an asset
  • Cemeterian Operations license/certification an asset

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works both indoors and outdoors
  • This position works weekday hours, with occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Because of the responsibilities of this position, the hours of work for this position will involve some evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on the needs of service requirements

Driver’s license/vehicle requirements

Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G (or higher) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver’s abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no ‘non-medical or administrative’ license suspension in the preceding three (3) years; because this position may be required to drive their own vehicle, a reliable vehicle is also required.

Background check requirements

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check. Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment; you must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.

  • Bending: frequent crouching squatting (measuring, placing flags, plaques, marking graves)
  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface, rough surface (marking graves, office work sales)
  • Sitting: frequent sitting in a chair, stool, vehicle seat (office, vehicle)
  • Lifting: frequent carrying (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs)
  • Standing: frequent standing inside, outside (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs)
  • Hands: frequent mousing (niche, crypt lettering, computer work)

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Benefits

This temporary full-time position has an hourly wage of $29.028 to $32.878 and will receive 15% in lieu of benefits (which includes group benefits, statutory & non-statutory holidays, and non-enrolment in OMERS) and 4% vacation pay. Where a permanent employee is receiving benefits and is the successful candidate for a temporary vacancy, benefits will remain as per the policy manual.

When internal employees are applying to temporary vacancy and want to maintain their permanent status: positions posted as “temporary” may be filled with permanent employees (full-time, part-time and call-in) who want to keep their permanent status provided their ability to be released to a temporary position is reviewed and approved with their current manager/supervisor before submitting an application.
